Job Description 

This is a teaching/tutoring position working directly with children with exceptional educational needs. Work performed includes specially designed instruction to meet the unique educational needs of each child. ABA 1:1 Instructors help children to develop mentally, physically, emotionally, and vocationally through the provision of appropriate individualized education. ABA 1:1 Instructors help children with exceptionalities to progress in educational and other social settings and prepare for life after school. ABA 1:1 Instructors assist in developing the child’s individualized behavior program (IBP) by evaluating the child’s progress through data collection and monitoring of behavior support services in varied learning settings based upon the individualized needs of each child; directly perform a variety of specialized learning techniques, communication strategies, and applied behavioral activities or techniques with children; assist in modeling the use of positive behavior support and intervention techniques for parents.


Typical Duties

Perform any combination of the following: educate children with autism by performing a variety of specialized learning techniques, communication strategies, applied behavioral activities, or techniques pertaining to the instruction of children with moderate to severe autism as described in the child’s IBP; evaluate progress in identified areas, record appropriate data regarding academic and/or behavioral information; assist in care for child’s physical and self- help needs; learn and use assistive technology and other specialized equipment; attend meetings, conferences, and in-services related to job responsibilities and professional development; assist in shaping behavior through positive reinforcement strategies; assist in shaping communication skills through the use of latest behavioral and special education research contributions; assist in physical needs including diapering, feeding, or gross motor skills; maintain a variety of service related records and prepare reports related to data. Perform other ABA 1:1 Instructor administrative tasks as assigned.


Ability to

Implement individualized behavior plans directly with children, evaluate a child’s educational and developmental progress, document the progress and implement follow-up procedures; maintain records and write reports. Maintain confidentiality per HIPAA standards; communicate effectively and orally and in writing. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with children, parents, teachers, behavior assistants, supervisors, and other staff.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position does not have a supervisory role.


Work Environment

This job operates in a professional, educational environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.


Physical Demands

This is largely an active role. This would require the ability to bend, sit, stand, lift, walk, and diaper a child throughout the day. Lifting requirement range is 5-20 lbs. but may exceed in excess of 20 lbs. in some cases.


Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Typical days and hours of work are Monday through Friday. Some evening and weekend hours may be required.


Job Requirements

A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in a social science preferred; experience implementing appropriate intervention techniques and strategies for handling and shaping challenging behaviors of disabled children in an organized setting desired; discrete trial training; functional analysis training. Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology or related field is preferable.
